Device Intelligence
Device intelligence is the practice of collecting, analyzing, and enriching device signals to identify visitors, detect fraud, assess risk, and personalize experiences without relying solely on PII or cookies. It turns raw browser and network attributes into an actionable picture of who or what is behind a request.
How Device Intelligence works
Device intelligence begins on the client, where a script harvests dozens of attributes: canvas and WebGL render output, installed fonts, screen and hardware characteristics, timezone and locale, and the shape of the browser's JavaScript environment. These raw signals are collected passively, without asking the visitor for anything, and describe the device rather than the person using it.
The signals are then transmitted to a server, where they are enriched with data the client cannot see or be trusted to report honestly: IP reputation, network type, geolocation, and cross-request history. Server-side enrichment is important because a determined attacker can spoof client values, but has far less control over how their traffic actually reaches the internet.
Finally, the combined picture is condensed into stable identifiers and scores. An identification layer produces a visitor identifier that persists across sessions, while risk and confidence scores quantify how trustworthy and how recognizable a given visit is. Downstream systems consume these outputs to allow, challenge, or block traffic.
Why Device Intelligence matters for fraud prevention
Fraud prevention increasingly cannot depend on cookies, which users clear or block, or on personal data, which is scarce at the top of a funnel and constrained by privacy law. Device intelligence fills that gap by recognizing returning devices and flagging anomalous ones before an account is created, a payment is attempted, or a promotion is claimed, making it a foundational layer for account takeover, payment fraud, and abuse detection.
How TRACIO handles it
TRACIO packages device intelligence into four coordinated products: Identification (a stable visitor identifier), Bot Detection, Smart Signals (server-computed enrichment), and IP Intelligence. The platform analyzes 130+ device signals and reports 99.5% identification accuracy on internal benchmarks with sub-50ms P95 latency, so the enriched verdict is available in real time at the moment a decision needs to be made.
