A risk score is a single numerical value that summarizes how likely a given visitor, session, or transaction is to be fraudulent. It condenses many underlying signals into one figure that fraud systems can compare against a threshold to allow, challenge, or block an action.
How Risk Score works
A risk score is computed by weighing a set of contributing signals and combining them into a normalized number, often on a 0-to-1 or 0-to-100 scale. Inputs typically include automation indicators, IP and network reputation, environment anomalies such as spoofed or inconsistent browser properties, and behavioral or historical patterns like how fast an identity is acting.
Scoring models range from transparent weighted rules to machine-learned classifiers trained on labeled fraud.
