Risk & Detection

Tor Detection

Tor detection is the identification of traffic arriving through the Tor anonymity network, based on known exit-node lists, network characteristics, and Tor Browser configuration patterns. It flags one of the strongest forms of network anonymization a visitor can use.

How it works

How Tor Detection works

The primary and most reliable method compares the connecting IP against published lists of Tor exit nodes. The Tor network's exit relays are enumerable and updated frequently, so an address appearing on a current exit-node list is a high-confidence indication that the visitor is using Tor.

Detection can be reinforced on the client side. The Tor Browser ships with a deliberately uniform configuration intended to make all its users look identical, and that very uniformity, along with characteristic settings and disabled features, is itself a recognizable pattern. Network-level characteristics of Tor circuits can add further evidence.

The combination of a matching exit node and Tor Browser fingerprint patterns produces a strong, low-ambiguity signal compared with VPN or proxy detection. That said, exit-node lists can lag reality slightly, so the signal is still expressed as a detection flag feeding into risk scoring rather than an infallible fact.

Why it matters

Why Tor Detection matters for fraud prevention

Tor provides much stronger anonymity than a typical VPN or proxy, which makes it attractive to a subset of fraudsters who want to make their traffic untraceable. While Tor also protects legitimate privacy and free-expression use, its presence in a high-value flow like payments or account creation warrants heightened scrutiny, since the anonymity it offers directly undermines many other fraud controls that rely on network attribution.

With TRACIO

How TRACIO handles it

TRACIO includes Tor detection among its Smart Signals, computed server-side by matching the connecting IP against current exit-node data and complemented by Tor Browser configuration patterns. As with VPN and proxy signals, the result is returned as context for the customer to weigh, letting teams apply stricter policies to anonymized traffic where their risk profile calls for it.
