Residential Proxy

A residential proxy routes traffic through IP addresses assigned by consumer internet providers to real homes, making automated requests appear to originate from ordinary users. It is the network layer attackers use to evade IP-based blocking and reputation checks.

How it works

How Residential Proxy works

A residential proxy relays a client's requests through a device on a consumer broadband or mobile network, so the destination server sees a residential IP address rather than the client's true origin. Because these addresses belong to legitimate ISP ranges and are shared by real users, they carry far better reputation than addresses from hosting providers.

The pools behind these services are often large and rotate frequently, giving an operator access to thousands or millions of addresses. Some pools are sourced through explicit agreements, while others are assembled from devices whose bandwidth is resold, sometimes bundled into free apps or SDKs without the owner's clear understanding. Traffic can be rotated per request or held on a sticky session for continuity.

For an attacker, residential proxies solve the network half of the disguise. A bot farm that would be trivially blocked by its datacenter origin instead spreads its requests across many residential addresses, defeating simple IP blocklists and per-IP rate limits. Paired with an anti-detect browser, each request can pair a fabricated device with a matching residential origin.

Detection relies on characteristics that residential proxies cannot fully hide. The autonomous system and address history still carry signal, unusual patterns emerge when many distinct accounts funnel through overlapping pools, and network-level attributes can reveal that traffic is being relayed even when the visible IP looks residential.
